The List by Patricia Forde
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this. Post-apocalyptic world where a teen girl is studying under the Wordsmith. The leader has determined that the world was destroyed by misuse of words, so he limits everyone to 500 words. But behind the scenes his real plan is to make everyone wordless and like animals, which he believes is the only way to save the world. When the girl finds out his secret plans, she must align herself with his enemies in order to fight his evil plans and save what is left of her world as she knows it. the author leaves it open at the end for a sequel, which I can't wait for. They mostly believe this is all there is left to the world, but her teacher mentions, "The birds still fly south." And he gives her maps when he dies, leaving it open to her possibly searching for lost lands.
