Every year Douglas County Missouri hosts a county fair. This is a good ole fashioned fair that
includes rides, demolition derby, 4-H contestants, craft fair, and food and
game booths. And for going on a decade
or more now my mother has entered her crafts in the fair. Almost every item she enters gets some kind
of prize. Most of her crafts, which
include crochet, quilts, afghans, cross stitch, plastic canvas items, and even
some canned goods, get blue ribbons. A
few of them get red, or second place, and once in a while she gets a white
ribbon, which is 3rd place.
Her skills and talents always amaze me.
One year she did a counted cross stitch of the Last Supper. It was huge, about three feet across by about
a foot tall, and took her about a year to complete the whole thing. She was so proud of that. She not only got a blue ribbon on it that
year but took her first ever “Best of Show” ribbon.
This year was the first year I entered the fair. There were three photography categories,
animal, landscape, and portrait, then the same categories but in black and
white. I was only able to print out
three color and two black and white photographs. For some reason, my third black and white
photo, a beautiful picture of a morning dove sitting on our fence on a rainy
day, would not print correctly. It kept
coming out with a small area of color, printer error most likely. I finally gave up and figured I’ll try to do
it next year. I was thrilled to see I
got two blue ribbons, two red ribbons, and one white ribbon on my entries. I was so excited. I will list the first one here today and then
do the others separately, as this post is getting rather long.
My picture here is the one on the bottom left corner. It is a beautiful hummingbird in flight
checking out my pink gladiolas that are outside my bay window where my writing
desk is. It took some doing to get this
picture through the window without having the camera focus on the window or
getting some of the window frame which has that decorative white framework in
it. The frame is quite often getting in
the way of any photo I want to take while I’m sitting at my desk. She wasn’t at her best, as I believe she may
have been starting to molt possibly, unless this is a male. Some young males can develop spots in the
throat area. Here is a closer picture of
it with the ribbon.
